Encouraging tomorrow's generation

Martin Simmonds from ITG The Lloyd’s building is no stranger to plush dinner functions, but its guests are usually a bit longer in the tooth than those who attended a three-course meal earlier this month.

The guests, along with their friends and family, were primarily in their late teens and early twenties.

They were at Lloyd’s to mark the conclusion of a 12-week personal development course run by Lloyd’s Charities Trust’s partner charity, The Prince’s Trust, for its Mitcham Team.

Collaboration

The event was organised and run by the IT and Property Services teams at Lloyd’s in conjunction with Community Affairs and Lloyd’s caterers, Avenance.

“The charity dinner idea resulted from the three ITG and Property Services team building objectives: to bring staff together to work in a different environment doing different things, to contribute something back to the community and to have fun,” says Marcus Alldrick, Lloyd’s Senior IT Manager.

The team – with volunteers from other Lloyd’s departments – spent the day preparing the three-course meal and function room for the event. They also served drinks and canapés during the reception and acted as table hosts throughout the dinner.

“We are so pleased that Lloyd’s chose to put on this event for the young people on our Team Programme,” says Prince’s Trust Mitcham Team Leader, Marie Woolton. “The Team absolutely loved being treated to a three course meal.”

“It was so exciting for them to celebrate their achievements on the programme somewhere like Lloyd’s and to be hosted by their employees,” she adds. “Believe me, this was an extraordinary experience for the team and one they will remember for a long time. Thank you so much.”

The Prince’s Trust

The Prince’s Trust Team Programme is designed to give young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to develop confidence, motivation and life skills by getting them to work as a team and complete projects in the local community.

As part of the conclusion to the Mitcham programme, the young people involved were also welcomed into the famous Lloyd’s building for an afternoon to get a sense of what working in the city is like.

A group of young people from The Prince's Trust at the Lloyd's eventThey spent the afternoon discussing the Lloyd’s working environment, including whether they would enjoy wearing suits every day and finding out about some of the stranger risks Lloyd’s has insured – such as celebrity body parts, Santa’s beard and even chest hair.

This was followed by the reception and dinner.

“The event was a resounding success, not only because we met our own objectives but because we made such a difference to the young people in celebrating their achievement with their family and friends, The Prince’s Trust team and their guests, and them concluding their course on a high,” says Alldrick.

The event was part of the wider Brighter Futures for Londoners partnership between The Prince’s Trust and Lloyd’s Charities Trust.
