Children score in Neighbourhood Games

Over 600 children have taken part in a competitive sports tournament organised by Stepping Stones Programme, part of the Tower Hamlets School Sport Partnership and supported by Lloyd’s Community programme.

Volunteers from Lloyd’s Community Programme, including Lloyd’s Chief Executive Richard Ward, refereed and umpired Basketball, Football, Hockey and Squash competitions and coached children in a number of taster sport sessions including Fencing, Boxing and Tag-Rugby.

Chris Willetts, Tower Hamlets School Sport Partnership Manager said "The Stepping Stones Programme performs an absolutely essential role in providing opportunities and tackling issues that affect sporting participation in Tower Hamlets. The Neighbourhood Games events are pivotal parts of the scheme and the contribution the Lloyd's volunteers made to the day was remarkable. They should be proud that they have made a telling contribution to what will undoubtedly be a cherished memory for young people who face their fair share of hardship.”

Opportunity to try new games
Children aged between 7-10 were given the opportunity to compete in the Winter Neighbourhood Games and try out new sports.

Sonny, aged 9 from the Shadwell Sting Rays said: “I’d played basketball and football before but hockey was a new sport for me. It was good and I will definitely play it again.’

The Stepping Stones Programme trains and supports young people (aged 16-19 years) to set-up mini-clubs for clusters of local primary schools in Tower Hamlets.  Being from the area themselves, the young people have a clear understanding of the barriers to taking part in out-of school sport activity which is a key to the success of the mini-clubs they run.  The Winter Neighbourhood Games brought together children from 32 mini-clubs to compete in the sports they have been playing over the winter months.

Vicky Mirfin, Community Affairs Manager at Lloyd's said, "With the London Olympics only a year away, it was great to see hundreds of children throwing themselves so enthusiastically into so many different sports and trying out new ones.  Supporting long-term engagement with sports for local young people is something Lloyd's Community Programme and our volunteers feel passionately about and we were delighted to support this event and the excellent work that Tower Hamlets Schools Sports Partnership is doing in the borough".

Last year over 1,460 people working in the Lloyd's Market volunteered through Lloyd’s Community Programme to support our local East London communities.  If you work in the Lloyd’s market and would like to volunteer, please contact natalie.tickle@lloyds.com.
