John Nelson
Chairman of Lloyd's
After qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1970, John Nelson began a long and distinguished career in banking when he joined Kleinwort Benson in 1971. He spent 15 years at the bank, working in both the UK and the US, before moving to Lazard in 1986 where for 13 years he ran the corporate finance division, becoming Vice-Chairman in 1990.
John Nelson became Chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston Europe in 1999, retiring in 2002. He then took up a number of board and advisory positions including Deputy Chairman of Kingfisher plc from 2002 to 2011.
He has also been a Non-Executive Director of BT, Woolwich plc, JP Morgan Cazenove and Cazenove Group. He joined Hammerson plc in 2004 and became Chairman in 2005, a position he continues to hold. He remains an advisor to Charterhouse Capital Partners LLP and is also a Trustee of the National Gallery. He is married with three children.
